What Impact Does the Weather Have on Your Mood?

By politicalwag.com | June 22, 2009

Do you ever find yourself easily agitated when the weather temperatures sky rocket? Or better yet, do you ever feel melancholy, fatigued, or even depressed when it’s cold and rainy outside? I’m sure that many of us have experienced some of these feelings at one time or another. So is the weather actually responsible for our prompt mood changes?

Although the answer to that question is not one hundred percent certain, there are a few studies which confirm that the weather does in fact have an impact on our mood. One such study proved that long periods of high temperatures increase the amount of crime. It seems that during hot weather, people are a lot more irritable and hostile. Several studies show a strong correlation between us and the climate.

Another way that it has proven how the weather impacts the mood is through a condition called SAD. Seasonal Affective Disorder (or SAD) is a condition which is characterized by depression during the winter months. The main cause of this condition is lack of sunlight. What happens is your body’s internal clock goes out of sync and it upsets the body’s routine. Some of the symptoms of SAD include: depression, sadness, fatigue, sleeping too much, loss of appetite, increase in appetite (particularly carbohydrates), increase in weight, decrease in activity, apathy and irritability. There are certainly a lot of facts which do in fact point to a strong correlation between the weather and our mood. So is there anything that we can do in order to improve how we feel during these climate changes. Well one way to deal with the weather changes is to look at the up-side. For instance, when the weather is hot, you should rejoice in the fact that it’s sunny and beautiful. Go for a breezy beach walk or embark upon some water activities. And when the weather is gloomy or rainy, think of all of the things that you had always wanted to do at home. Work on a painting or play some board games with your kids. Simply don’t let the weather ruin your mood.

Summer: I'm sluggish and irritable. Winter: I'm calm and reflective. Spring: I'm melancholic and filled with longing.

Yes, the weather and seasons have a great impact. I'm very sensitive to the weather, and live in a place with distinct seasons, which is probably not a good thing… lol. I should live in a tropical area where I could only tell the seasons apart if I looked at a calendar!! I think I'd be a much happier person if the sun was shining and I didn't feel the psychological urge to hibernate from November to March…

It used to give an impact on my mood. But now I don't really care for it. My mood is not determined by the weather. Of course is it's sunny, everyone's mood will up, who doesn't? But Why I should have my mood being controlled by the weather?

Yes it most definately does with me. If I wake up and its dull or raining, it really p***es me off all day. but like you said if it's lovely and sunny like it is here in sheffield, I feel great, I'll be going out in it soon.

Yes, it definitly does have an effect on your mood. Like Oregon is like the only state that doesnt have very many sunny days and they have the highest rate for suicide

Yes, a sunny day gives me much more 'get up and go' and I get loads more done on those days! If it's dreary I can't be bothered to do anything much although I probably should because it would almost certainly lift my mood!

Here the weather was 85 day before yesterday and the high today is going to be in the mid 50's. The weather affects on both physical and emotionally. Cold and rain make me hurt a lot worse and the sunshine makes me feel much better. The weather definitly affects our moods.

no way! i love rain. If it's raining and im inside, i feel cozy and warm… and if i run outside in the rain on the deserted streets, it makes me feel daring, rain is also kinda romantic and i love it. sunny to me is like any othr day tho, it kinda gets boring after a while. i guess i might take it for granted, but sunny with clear skies is so predictable and boring
how can you call rain dull? haha.. i guess its cuz it really doesnt rain that much where i live (west coast, california)

Definately the chance to go outside is lovely, even if it's just sitting in the garden studying (without my deckchair since it's broken)

Yes it does. It isn't just the sun or lack of it but the barometric pressure and atmosphere like that. I think the weather affects everyone to some degree. A large degree or small we are all affected by the weather, whether we realize it or not.
