What do you think the purpose of religion is? How and why did religion originate?
From what I understand, superstition were made to fill the gaps. And superstition were turned into religion by men who wanted power. They use religion to control other people through fear. And religion works best against the weak-minded who don't have the guts to accept reality for what it is. Religious leaders all the way from the past took advantage of this and used religion to control them. That is why you see so many different religions all over the world. Each culture has its own made up religion. It's so obvious. It has continued until today and the weak-minded are still being exploited.
Religion came out of modern homo sapiens. As soon as our brain evolved to the point at which we were able to contemplate our own origins, we went passed a threshold of previous hominids. Religion accompanied civilizations and was built upon for thousands of years. People tend to forget that had it not been for evolution, there would not be the large amount of neural connections in our brains that would allow us to create something like christianity or islam.

God did not originate religion. Man invented religion to gain power and money and honor.

Humans were created for serving Anunna (the fifty gods). Humans were taught to be COMPLETELY subservient to them and not think for themselves but just do what they were told. After they left (or did they) we were left with the same silly stories, reincarnated and splintered into differing beliefs. Anyone who studies ALL world religions and the oldest of them all, Yezidis and Sumerian, they quickly unearth some frightening truths…

Superstition, old age and crazy people filled in the gaps before.
Religion is just when old men start to make rules about what is or isn't right based on the previous three.

You're right. It's a way to answer those questions that we all want to know: where did we come from, where do we go when we die, what is our relation to the things around us, why do things happen the way they do, etc.

its not what you claim
religion was started to worship god
some have departed from what god has taught in the scriptures and have made their own rules and regulations and even their own god or gods to worship.

Organized religion serves 2 major roles:
1. Control the populace by hanging an undetectable, unprovable, and undefeatable threat over people's heads, then telling them them THIS belief system alone holds escape.
2. Appease the unruly poor by telling them that this life is worthless, and thier poverty and unfair treatment are small compared to the bliss that awaits them in heaven.
It is a brilliantly engineered scheme that has been keeping the same groups in power for the last few thousand years.

I think the earliest 'religions' were shamanic–meaning not necessarily that animal spirits were worshipped, but more that there would be a recognized 'holy one' in a clan or tribe. I think religions grew as communities grew.
I think most religions began as ways to explain natural events, both good and bad. They kept small communities tightly-knit and gave them a common spiritual identity. Because they explained both good and bad natural events, they evolved characters, which had to be magical, out of the ordinary, to explain tumultuous events as well as to entertain.
I think evolution in religion occurred with evolution in lifestyle from hunter-gatherer to agrarian and city-bred. Someone had a siritual epiphany and realized that all gods could be one Power. Unfortunately, this wisdom could be too easily abused and could lead to intolerance, rather than an acceptance that all gods are equally valid; monotheism is just an evolution from polytheism.
I'm rambling, but that's essentially how and why I think religions evolved and why we have them in the first place.

In the show Undeclared, the british dude says something about religion being made up by the Rich and it struck me as soo true.
I also learned that racism was created so that the poor people wouldn't revolt against the wealthy.

Real, pure religion, began with man as soon as he had breath. God walked in the garden of Eden in the cool of the day. He talked with people, had a relationship with them, and demanded things of them for their own good. Some think this is much, but see how long you let your kids go (or any kids for that matter) with no demands on their behavior. As man rebelled more and more, God demanded more and more. Religion consists of this continuing journey to get back to God and the way we lived with Him in the garden. Included is a communication line (prayer), a guidebook (Bible), a Helper (the Spirit of God that has told you right from wrong since you could first reason), and a Way to get back to God (God's Son, Jesus Christ). I know this sounds narrow (and it is) but all religions aside of true and "pure" religion are counterfeits. I am more that happy to defend my faith without trashing your beliefs. Jesus is telling you to deny yourself what you want, and give Him what He wants: you. This is religion at its purest.

The purpose of religion is to worship and remember ONE almighty God and obey the TEN COMMANDMENTS. It originated from day one, from Adam. Adam was ordered to remember his LORD. DO NOT associate partners with your lord?

People who wanted to wanted to know what happened after they died.
They couldn't accept the idea that nothing happens, we're here on earth for no reason, and intelligent life exists for no reason. Therefore they came up with the idea of a higher power. It is actually convincing in some areas, like the fact that religion exists in different (but still similar in some aspects) forms all over the world.
