Personal Security and Safety Tips-Do’s and Dont’s

By politicalwag.com | June 25, 2009

Here is a list of things you should or should not do to help maintain your personal safety:

  • Always stay aware of what you are doing and what is going on around you.
  • Walk calmly and confidently so that you do not display the look of a frightened victim-in-waiting.
  • Vary your activities so that you do not run or walk the same route every day.
  • Walk in well-lit areas and as far away from bushes, recessed doorways, and other dark, potential hiding places when possible.
  • Take a self-defense class.
  • Carry your wallet on the inside coat pocket or front pants pocket. If you carry a purse, place it in front of you with the open end toward you.
  • Do not flash huge amounts of money or jewelry in public places especially if you are in ghetto or hood places.
  • If you work late at night, have a friend, co-worker, security guard, or campus escort service walk you to your car.
  • Keep your keys handy as you approach your apartment, car, or house.
  • When you ride on a bus, sit close to the driver and stay awake during the entire ride.
  • Always lock your car doors when you drive.
  • When stopped at a stop light, position your vehicle with enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you so that you have enough room to maneuver away in case somebody attempts to gain entry into your vehicle while you are stopped.
  • Park your car in well-lit and well-traveled areas.
  • Always have your keys ready in hand when approaching your parked car.
  • Look underneath your car as you approach it to see if anybody is hiding there.
  • Look into the back seat of your car before entering it. The back seat is a great hiding place for crooks looking to carjack you. Lock the doors right away after you enter.
  • Do not keep your home address anywhere within your car.
  • Keep your remote garage door opener with you instead of in your car.
  • Do not leave your car’s engine running either in the parking lot, driveway, or away from home.
  • When shopping, go with a friend rather than by yourself.
  • When shopping, do not occupy both arms. Keep one arm free.
  • Do not take risks with strangers by giving them a ride, giving them a dollar when the ask for it, allowing them to enter your home, or letting them convince you to go with them somewhere for any reason.

Remember. Your safety should always be at the top of your list. The crook’s safety should be a distant second.
